September 2023 CSA Share Newsletter

My favorite time of the year, autumn. Yet, what a summer! Your share is shipping NEXT Tuesday September 5th and for those locally, we plan on delivering them to your door this Friday morning. If you need an alternative date, just let us know by emailing us. We are resuming shipping every week ( as soon as the heat lifts in mid September) and you can have us ship any week it suits you best.

Lots of stuff in the news about fires, heat waves, and new laws and while I do keep up on it, it felt like just keeping meals ready, laundry done, and all the animal care and fall prep didn’t leave much time to dwell on these. We keep getting more questions about how certain new laws ( like this one) affect our ranch and family. The simple answer is, not a lot. In fact, we are looking at alternatives to our current way to get our meat to you, simply because of the vulnerability of food supply chain. Will keep you all up to date as the plan goes from ‘roughed out’ to a little more ‘polished’.

Otto continues to thrive, loving his ranch life adventures. Training has begun, simple things like being called to come but more exciting things like helping to ‘herd’ the chickens back into the coop were met with a great deal of exuberance. Vinny the breeding bull came up lame two weeks ago and we found a small wire in his hoof. It was pulled out, the hoof treated and we are just waiting for him to heal before he can head back out to his ladies. The fall pastures have been fantastic, the grasses are thick and heavy. We are on our third cut on a few fields but some have only had two grazes for the entire season ( a real improvement!) Clean-up time has begun and getting wood put in before snow starts to fly, which if the Farmers’ Almanac is correct, might be early.

Every month your invoice will come out on the 21st and this newsletter will be posted on our blog.  I will also email you the link so you don’t miss the news. If the first shipping date doesn’t work for you, just let us know and we can arrange a later ship day. Here is the upcoming schedule!

It can be easy to forget things, at least for me. You could say it is age catching up with me, but alas, I’ve never been a good remember-er. The benefit to me is; I’m always surprised by the newness of things – fall flowers have never been so beautiful, a newborn calf is so delightful to see take its first steps, and fall rushes in and past far too quickly. My living room looks like a bomb went off, if a bomb contained boxes full of clothes, tools, gardening gloves, spare parts, plenty of dust and still no missing item we have been searching for. All this in preparation for fall nesting. As the dusk descends quicker each evening I will pull candles & blankets out once again. Praying that as you settle into fall it brings peace and enjoyment, different with each season.

Cheers,

Kassandra
